Comedy Analysis

Ross and His Leather Pants

There's a lot to unpack here. First of all, something they don't show you in this clip is that Ross' leather pants have already been introduced as a comical element to the episode, because his friends all make fun of him for wearing them earlier in the episode. This is a great set up to Ross' predicament.

One of the greatest things about this clip is the progression of urgency, aka increased exaggeration. Ross' biggest concern in each moment is solving his immediate problem, but failing to look ahead means each solution introduces another worse problem. He basically snowballs from a point of simply wanting to look good in front of his date to losing all dignity and just wanting to get his pants back on.

The issue of status is constantly present. Overall, Ross just wants to have a successful date, but the worse the problem gets, the more apparent it is that he won't be able to recover. His status slowly diminishes the more desperate he becomes.

The scene also deals with timing well. Each break where the camera switches from Ross to Joey on the phone gives us a break from Ross' perspective, and this difference in and of itself is humorous. Joey is relaxed, on the phone, while Ross is panicking and covering himself mindlessly in various substances like baby powder and lotion.

Another element of humor is embedded in the context of the show; Joey is not the brightest friend of the group. He's a good friend, and genuinely helpful and sweet, but he's kind of an idiot. The fact that he was the first person Ross calls for help (instead of his friend Chandler, or his sister Monica) is foreshadowing his struggles being useless.d

The final thing that adds to the humor is the laugh track. Some people find laugh tracks annoying, but it prompts the viewer to find the scene more humorous.
